PT 108, Section 2, Question 19

Strengthen

Argument structure

Conclusion

"Me too" drugs can benefit consumers.

Evidence

"Me too" drugs are drugs that more or less copy drugs made by other companies. They can reduce the price of drugs already on the market that have very similar effects.

Explanation

The author concludes that consumers benefit from the price reductions brought about by me too drugs.

This seems like a decent argument, but it could be strengthened by showing that consumers really do spend less on medicine because of me too drugs (the price reduction doesn't just get captured by insurance companies or something like that) and that the me too drugs are just as effective/lack harmful disadvantages compared to the drugs already on the market.

Answer choices

(A)

This shows another great benefit to consumers besides potential price reductions. Me too drugs sometimes end up working even better than the drugs they attempt to replicate.

(B)

This doesn't strengthen that "me too" drugs benefit consumers. In fact, it points out a downside to "me too" drugs. They take resources away from innovation.

(C)

This doesn't tell us anything about benefits to the consumer.

(D)

This doesn't tell us that consumers can benefit from "me too" drugs. Similar to (B), this answer choice indicates that "me too" drugs may curb innovation to some extent.

(E)

Again, this tells us nothing about if consumers benefit. Just that some companies can be harmed.
