Whether or not they're motivated by profit and whether or not the profits are possible are distinct and in this case (and many similar cases on the LSAT, this is a trap answer) unrelated.

(D)

Not relevant. The conclusion is about the small retailers who are forced to compete with large chains.

(E)

This indicates why the conclusion isn't proven. The author never proved that exceptional service is actually necessary for the small retailers. There could be other explanations/solutions such as maybe their customers just feel better about supporting a local business.
