Paradox

Paradox questions are kind of fun. The stimulus will give us a situation (generally not an argument) that doesn't seem to make sense. Try to think of what could be going on to create the weird discrepancy in the information!

Fully Understand the Discrepancy

Repeat to yourself exactly what is odd about the situation in the stimulus. Common trap answer choices will explain something else about the stimulus but not address the paradox, or may just be related to the content of the stimulus but not address the paradox.

I frequently see students pick these types of trap answers and get confused about how they're wrong. But then when I explicitly ask them "does that answer choice explain *insert the weird thing/paradox here*" they agree that it does not.

Make Predictions

Sometimes students find that if they sit with the stimulus for 5-10 seconds they will be able to think of ways in which the discrepancy in the stimulus could be resolved. Always do this when you are drilling this question type, don't rush to the answer choices. Not only is it good exercise for your brain, it will also help you better digest the information and understand what you have to explain so that you can more accurately select the correct answer choice.

When the Stimulus is not a Paradox

Every once in a while you'll encounter an Explain question where the stimulus is not paradoxical. That's ok, our goal is the same: explain why the phenomenon in the stimulus is occurring. Practice the examples below:
